a dedicated member of your birth dream team.

I am very passionate about childbirth and I work incredibly hard to ensure that my clients have a positive and memorable birth experience however they may envision that to look. My goal is for you to feel informed, respected and for your voice to be heard by your birthing team in your chosen birth environment.

What is a doula?

A birth doula gives continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to mothers before, during, and after childbirth for the best experience. At Doula By Design, I offer top support: guiding comfort measures, creating a birth plan, and being there with expertise on your baby’s day. As a doula I work with your care provider and Partner for seamless support. Whether at home, a birth center, or hospital, I aim for you to feel empowered!

What is a postpartum doula?

Whether this is your first or sixth baby, the postpartum period is a major time of transition for you, your body, and — well — your whole family.

a postpartum doula provides non-medical support in these important days and weeks following delivery.

This support is emotional and physical, as well as informational. And while the doula does help with infant care, her primary focus is on the mother and her family. The International Childbirth Education Association describes the role as “mothering the mother.”

Angela Lien Doula by Design

I’m a San Diego native and a proud mother of three beautiful children. My journey to becoming a doula began after the birth of my first child, which took place at home. At that time, I had no idea what a doula was, nor did I fully understand the importance of having one. I was completely under-educated and under-prepared for the experience. It was an agonizing 24 hour ordeal with a beautiful ending.

The birth of my first child rocked my world. It was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the crucial need for continuous emotional and physical support during labor. Support that goes beyond what a partner or healthcare provider can offer. This realization ignited my passion for becoming a doula, and I have been dedicated to supporting and empowering women through their birthing journeys ever since.

Honestly, I’ve always been a doula, a giver, a sister, a person to lean on. I love all aspects of what I do, whether it’s physically holding hips or emotionally holding space.

Within my practice I try to achieve a 50:50 balance of the spiritual, energetic with the scientific, evidence-based. As I learn more about you, our conversations shift to augment the type of support that best resonates with you and supports your goals.

I am a certified labor doula (CLD) and certified postpartum doula (CPD) through DONA (Doulas of North America) and have attended many births in various settings - homebirths, birth centers and hospitals. I actively attend workshops, courses and continuing education classes on childbirth, hypnobirthing, spinning babies, breastfeeding, postpartum, newborn care and holding space for pregnancy loss.

I fully believe that all pregnant persons have an innate inner-knowing that is a powerful guide through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Our time together will emphasize self-discovery as we listen to your intuition, practice mindfulness & breathwork, energetic healing & support, and prepare for a birth as unique as you.

  • "Our doula was a calming presence and great support for me and my husband. I appreciated her non-biased help leading up to and during the birth. She listened to and respected our birth plan entirely and was very receptive during our labor."

    ~ Sophie, San Diego

  • "This was my first birth and couldn't imagine going through it without the support from Angie at Doula By Design. HIGHLY recommend and hope that many more choose to experience the blessing of a doula."

    ~ Dani, Escondido

  • “Angie was a godsend. She came during a desperate time when my husband and I needed sleep and relief. Not only were we able to get a full night's rest but she provided guidance, encouragement, and comfort during an overnight shift and we look forward to continuing seeking her help and guidance as we navigate the postpartum period.”
